Hampden-Sydney College

250 Years of Forming Good Men and Good Citizens

To commemorate its two and a half centuries of service to Commonwealth and Nation, the College commissioned this set of six studies on various aspects of its institutional history. The Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), a program of the Council of Independent Colleges supported by the Lilly Endowment and member dues, generously funded this project.

This six-book set comes in an organizer to keep all your volumes together. It is decorated with marbled paper graphics and an image of the school seal from 1783. The volumes included are A brief history of Hampden-Sydney College by Shomo, John Hampden & Algernon Sydney by Greenspan, Between Athens & Jerusalem by Utzinger, From academy to college by Coombs, African American History by Emmons, and The Campus by Pearson & McClintock.

*On the cover: The oldest surviving impression of the Seal of 1783, on the diploma of Nash LeGrand, 1786. The marbled papers were produced with Professor Evan Davis in his class "English 360: Authorship and the history of the book." Students were: Miles Wlkin '27, Pierce Strubhar '27, Theron Hoar '25, Will Thomas '25, Ean Larsen '25, John Scott '25
